Police: Walmart Cashier Helped Man Walk Out With Nearly $2,000 in Merchandise

JONESBORO, Ark. — An 18-year-old was arrested after police said a Walmart employee helped him leave the store with nearly $2,000 in merchandise without paying.

Damarion Zaikee Jarelle Jackson, 18, was arrested for theft of property valued at more than $1,000 but less than $5,000. The charge is a Class D felony.

According to a probable cause affidavit, officers with the Jonesboro Police Department were notified on May 22 of a theft investigation at Walmart on Highland Drive. The affidavit said an associate reported that on May 19, a juvenile suspect who was working their final shift as a cashier used their position to assist Jackson in taking merchandise without paying.

The juvenile suspect worked in the electronics department and had access to locked merchandise within the store, according to the affidavit.

After reviewing surveillance footage, police said the juvenile was seen scanning merchandise for Jackson at a register. The affidavit said the juvenile then pretended to complete the transaction before canceling it and giving Jackson a voided receipt.

Jackson then left the store with the merchandise without paying, according to police.

During the investigation, police said social media accounts showed Jackson was associated with the juvenile. The affidavit said Jackson’s driver’s license photo also matched the person seen in the surveillance footage.

The juvenile was later interviewed after waiving Miranda rights and told police they were stealing the items, according to the affidavit.

Police said the value of the merchandise was $1,965.97.

Jackson’s next court date is July 30. Bail was set at $25,000 cash or surety.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
