JONESBORO, Ark. – Police saved a child who fell through the ice while playing, over the weekend in Jonesboro, and the heroism was captured on body-worn camera.
It happened around 10:15 AM on Saturday, January 20 at the 700-block of Gladiolus Drive in Jonesboro, an incident report shows. In the middle of frigid temperatures, ice had formed on a small pond. An 8-year-old child believed he would be safe playing on the frozen pond. He was mistaken. He fell through and was unable to climb out of the frigid water.
Officer Troy Ellison arrived on the scene first and didn’t hesitate. He located the child and quickly crawled onto the ice to reach the crying, scared youth. Putting himself in danger of also falling through the ice, the officer grabbed the child.
Other responders were arriving on the scene and providing aid, as well. A social media post from JPD specifically mentioned Lt. Shon Morris and members of the Jonesboro Fire Department, who can be seen in the video aiding with the icy extraction.
Fortunately, the child was pulled out of the water.
“I’m very proud of Officer Ellison’s quick response and reaction to the incident,” Chief of Police Rick Elliott told NEA Report, also adding praise for Lt. Morris and the JFD fire fighters who aided.
The officers handed the young man off to the responders on the other side of the fence. The child was taken to the hospital to be checked out but appears to have avoided serious injury.
“Ellison’s actions are just indicative of the job he does day in and day out,” Chief Elliott added. “He’s been a great officer and very hard working officer and this is just what he does. But I suspect any of my officers would have done the same. We have a great department of dedicated men and women who respond and jump into anything that comes up daily without hesitation.”
Police urge caution against playing on the ice.
