Inmate Death in Craighead County Under Investigation

JONESBORO, Ark. – An individual died last week while in custody of the Craighead County Detention Center. The sheriff’s department does not suspect foul play was involved.

Kerry Dewayne Cockrell, 41, suffered a medical emergency on Wednesday, January 17, Chief Deputy Justin Rolland confirmed to NEA Report. Life-saving measures were performed at the jail and Cockrell was taken to a local hospital but efforts to save his life were not successful.

It is believed a medical issue was the cause of death, Rolland said. No foul play is suspected.

Next of kin were notified of the tragic passing.

The body has been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for autopsy to confirm the cause of death.

Cockrell was in Craighead County Jail on a failure to appear warrant from a driving on a suspended license case. In addition, he had open cases in Poinsett County for theft of property and fraudulent use of a credit card, greater than $5,000 but less than $25,000. Court records show warrants for his arrest in those cases, both felonies, as well.
