Speeding Stop Leads to Felony Drug and Firearm Arrests in Jonesboro

JONESBORO, Ark. – A traffic stop for allegedly driving 50 over the speed limit resulted in several felony charges for the two suspects arrested last week in Jonesboro.

It happened around 8:36 PM on Jan.19, when Officer Melvin Isom observed a green Jeep turning onto Fairfield Drive from Race Street in Jonesboro.

As he got behind the vehicle, the officer reported it immediately sped up, going approximately 70 miles per hour in a 20 MPH zone. The officer ended up stopping the vehicle at the 3000-block of Meador Drive.

Tamarjal Darik Hamilton, 22, and Traylen Bronsha Vanpelt, 24, both of Jonesboro, were taken into custody. The police report states that the two occupants were both in possession of drugs and guns.

Officers logged numerous pieces of evidence in the case, including:

  • an AR-15 pistol reported to belong to Hamilton
  • 36 green-tip 5.56 rounds reported to belong to Hamilton
  • a medicine bottle suspected to contain Promethazine, reported to belong to Vanpelt
  • approximately 50.5 ounces of a pinkish liquid believed to be “lean” with Promethazine
  • approximately 4.75 ounces of a green leafy substance in a clear plastic bag

The police report lists charges including simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms, possession of schedule VI with purpose to deliver, possession of schedule IV or V, greater than 400 grams but less than 800 grams, and tampering with evidence – all felonies.

Hamilton also faces a misdemeanor charge of speeding more than 15 MPH over the limit.
