Prosecutors Seek to Revoke Probation of Jonesboro Sex Offender

JONESBORO, Ark. —Prosecutors are seeking to revoke the probation of a man convicted of a sexual offense after they say he’s failed to comply with his registration requirements.

Kris-Shawn Payton, 20, of Jonesboro, appeared in court on Wednesday for a petition to revoke his probation. Special Judge Ralph Wilson set bail at $35,000 in this case.

Payton’s initial charge was from 16JCR-24-800. On June 8, 2024, JPD officers responded to a residential area over reports of shots heard. Officers arrived and found Payton, then 19, inside a 14-year-old female victim’s home. The two had engaged in sexual activity, according to statements from the female.

Payton was arrested for sexual indecency with a child.

On July 26, 2024, the defendant pled guilty and received 60 months of supervised probation. He was ordered to register as a sex offender and pay fines and costs to Craighead County.

The petition to revoke alleges he did neither.

Payton was first arrested for failure to comply in January 2025. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 120 days in jail, with a 60-month suspended sentence, according to court records.

On August 3, 2025, Payton was arrested again for felony failure to register as a sex offender, a Class C felony. That PC affidavit states that he was last seen by the probation office on May 12, when he completed a change of address.

Payton is considered a level three (high risk) sex offender, prohibited from living within 2,000 feet of a property that includes a school or daycare. This includes public parks and youth centers, the affidavit said. Bail was set at $100,000 cash or surety by Judge Tommy Fowler.

Now, Payton has three open cases. He faces probation revocation in 16JCR-24-800, his initial arrest. He faces revocation of his suspended sentence in 16JCR-25-190, his first failure to comply arrest. And finally, he faces a Class C felony in 16JCR-25-917.

By itself, a Class C felony charge carries a maximum of 10 years in prison.

Payton’s next court date in the newest case is set for October 30, 2025.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
