Paragould Man Arrested for Sex Crimes Involving Child Victim

PARAGOULD, Ark. – A suspect faces serious charges after allegations were made that he violated a 12-year old child.

On December 13, 2023, the Arkansas Child Abuse Hotline received a report referencing a 12-year old female who had made a disclosure of sexual abuse.

The young female was interviewed the next day by the Arkansas State Police Crimes Against Children Division. The probable cause affidavit says that she disclosed sexual acts that would constitute rape and sexual assault by definition of statute. The victim named the suspect, William J. Derby, as her offender and stated the abused occurred on Tuesday, December 12, 2023.

Between December 13 and April 25, 2024, the affidavit says multiple people were interviewed and corroborated portions of the disclosure.

On April 16, 2024, the affidavit says a Mirandized interview was conducted of Derby. The report alleges he made incriminating statements at that time.

Derby is being charged with rape, a Class Y felony, and second degree sexual assault, a Class B felony.

Judge Dan Stidham ordered Derby held without bond.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
