JONESBORO, Ark. – Scammers often target individual people but in at least one recent case reported in Jonesboro, they targeted a business.
The report filed with the Jonesboro Police Department detailed the incident, which happened on March 23 at 108 E. Highland Drive, Walgreens. The report says an employee was called by someone claiming to be asset protection, stating there were multiple fraudulent charges coming from the store’s location. The caller asked for a cell phone number so that they could send bar codes for him to scan so they could look at the charges coming from the store.
The employee stated he gave the caller his phone number and scanned the bar codes as the caller instructed. When he scanned each bar code, the caller advised him of what information he needed to type into the system. The employee told police it was random peoples’ drivers license numbers, birth dates, and names, all from Alabama residents.
Once he got done with that task, the caller asked a question about money on gift cards. That’s when the employee realized it was a scam and hung up. The employee immediately called a manager after.
In total, the report says the store was scammed out of $2,700.
The case is inactive due to it being a scam. Authorities need more leads to pursue the investigation, the report says.
The suspect, if apprehended, faces a felony theft charge.
