JONESBORO, Ark. – St. Bernards Medical Center will sponsor a free prostate cancer screening from 7 to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 6, at St. Bernards Auditorium, 505 East Washington Ave.
Screenings are designed for men between the ages of 40 and 75.
The National Cancer Institute indicates that one in seven men will develop prostate cancer and that it is the second most common cancer among men in the United States.
Primarily a disease of older men, cancer of the prostate tends to grow more slowly than other types of cancers. A man may have cancerous cells for many years before developing symptoms – or he may never develop symptoms at all.
Factors closely linked to prostate cancer risk include age, family history and ethnicity. Older men – especially those 50 or older – are at higher risk. African-American men have the highest rates of prostate cancer, followed by whites, Hispanics, Asian-Pacific islanders and native Americans.
The first 100 men will receive a free ticket to the Arkansas State-Miami football game, and each participant will be entered to win an A-State prize package. St. Bernards is joining with A-State Athletics to increase awareness of prostate cancer as the official sponsor of the first Red Wolves home football game of the season on Sept. 9.
