JONESBORO, Ark. — A Craighead County suspect was arrested after deputies said a domestic disturbance involved allegations of physical assault and interference with an emergency call.
Nickolas Wade Jones, 26, was arrested by the Craighead County Sheriff’s Office on suspicion of third-degree domestic battery and second-degree interference with emergency communications.
Third-degree domestic battery is a felony when a suspect has multiple offenses within five years. Second-degree interference with emergency communications is a misdemeanor.
According to the probable cause affidavit, deputies were dispatched March 1 to the area around Herman Baptist Church on Highway 91 West for an ongoing domestic disturbance. Dispatch told deputies a female caller had said her boyfriend was chasing her in a vehicle while she was on foot, and the line suddenly disconnected.
Deputies checked the surrounding area and county roads but were initially unable to find either person, according to the affidavit. Deputies later determined the alleged victim was at an apartment on Craighead 716 Road.
The alleged victim told deputies she and Jones had been sitting at the cemetery across from Herman Baptist Church visiting a grave site when the two began arguing, according to the affidavit. She alleged Jones assaulted her and grabbed her by the mouth, blocking her airway through her nose and mouth to the point that she could not breathe.
The victim also told deputies she was on the phone with 911 dispatch when Jones knocked the phone out of her hand, shattering it when it hit the ground, according to the affidavit.
While the victim was explaining the incident to deputies, Jones reportedly walked onto the property from an adjacent apartment building and gave himself up. He was detained and secured in a patrol vehicle while deputies continued their investigation.
Deputies also spoke with Jones, who said the two had been arguing and that the victim had hit him in the side of the face, according to the affidavit. Deputies reported there were no marks present at the time of the field interview.
Jones also told deputies the victim had jumped out of the vehicle and walked away while talking to dispatch. He said he took control of the vehicle and followed her to Herman Baptist Church, where he said she dropped her phone during an argument in the church parking lot and it broke, according to the affidavit.
Deputies determined Jones was the primary aggressor and arrested him.
Bond was set at $35,000 cash or surety. Jones was also ordered to wear a GPS ankle monitor and have no contact with the victim. His next court date is June 26.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
