MARKED TREE, Ark. — A Marked Tree man was arrested Friday in connection with the June 28 crash that killed Marked Tree Police Officer Trevor Howard and injured another officer.
Kareem Abdul-Jabaar Jones, 28, was taken into custody Friday, July 17, by Marked Tree police officers and Arkansas State Police special agents and troopers, according to an ASP news release.
Jones was transported to the Poinsett County Detention Center and booked on allegations of negligent homicide, second-degree battery, criminal mischief, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, having no insurance, and failure to stop at a stop sign.
The crash occurred during the early morning hours of June 28. ASP said Jones was driving a 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis north on Broadway, also known as Arkansas 14, as Officers Anthony Johnson and Howard traveled east on Nathan Street in a Dodge Ram 1500.
Jones allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the passenger side of the officers’ vehicle, causing the pickup to overturn.
Howard, who was riding in the passenger seat, suffered fatal injuries. Johnson was treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening and later released.
ASP said no additional information was being released Friday.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
