JONESBORO, Ark. — Two Jonesboro defendants are accused of robbing a victim at gunpoint, stealing his car, phone, and other property, then later leading officers to recover the stolen vehicle, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Nicky Jay Evans, 19, and Averyon Markise Sanders, 21, both of Jonesboro, are each charged with aggravated robbery, theft of a vehicle valued at less than $25,000 but greater than $5,000, theft of property-credit or debit cards, and theft of $1,000 or less.
At Wednesday’s 8.1 hearings, Judge David Boling set bond at $150,000 cash or surety for both Evans and Sanders.
According to the affidavit, Jonesboro police responded on April 14 to a carjacking incident. The victim told police he was robbed at gunpoint by two suspects wearing ski masks, one armed with a pistol and the other with an AR pistol.
The victim said one suspect patted him down while the other took money from his pants. He also told police his phone and keys were stolen, along with his car. Authorities said the victim then ran from the scene.
Police were able to track the victim’s phone through an app, and the victim gave officers its showing location, according to the affidavit. Officers went to the area where the phone appeared to be, did not locate the victim’s car, but found a black Dodge Charger. The victim then confirmed to police that the phone should be at that location, the affidavit states.
Officers stopped the vehicle and performed a K-9 sniff, which resulted in a positive alert, according to the affidavit. Police identified two occupants, later identified as Evans and Sanders, and searched the car.
During the search, officers said they found the victim’s phone, two ski masks, a Glock pistol, and an AR pistol.
Police arrested Evans and Sanders and took them to the police department for interviews, according to the affidavit. During an interview, one suspect admitted to robbing the victim and said he had the AR pistol, while the other suspect had the Glock pistol, the affidavit states. That suspect denied stealing the vehicle during the robbery.
Later in the day, Arkansas State Police located the stolen car hidden in the woods near where Evans and Sanders were arrested, according to the affidavit.
Evans and Sanders are charged with:
Aggravated robbery, Class Y felony
Theft of a vehicle valued at less than $25,000 but greater than $5,000, Class C felony
Theft of property-credit or debit cards, Class D felony
Theft of $1,000 or less, Class A misdemeanor
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
