Traffic Stop Leads to Fentanyl, Meth Arrest in Jonesboro

JONESBORO, Ark. — A simple turn-signal violation led to a felony drug arrest after police say a traffic stop uncovered fentanyl and methamphetamine inside a vehicle, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Tristan Payne, 29, of Jonesboro, is charged with possession of fentanyl with purpose to deliver, a Class C felony; possession of meth or cocaine, a Class D felony; and failure to use a turn signal.

Investigators said Payne was pulled over after making a right turn without signaling. Officers reported that Payne appeared nervous and that a strong cover scent was coming from the vehicle. A K-9 officer was called to the scene, and before the dog was deployed, Payne reportedly told officers he had recently smoked marijuana in the vehicle and had a bag of meth in the driver’s door.

K-9 Ollie then alerted to the odor of narcotics, and officers conducted a search. Inside the driver’s door, police found a plastic bag containing meth that officers suspected was laced with fentanyl due to visible white powder in the mixture. Field testing confirmed the substance contained both fentanyl and methamphetamine.

Judge Tommy Fowler noted Payne’s surprised look when he read the charge of fentanyl. However, Payne was advised of his right to remain silent, as anything he said could be used against him in court. Fowler set Payne’s bail at $100,000 cash or surety. His next court date is Jan. 23.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
