Woman Arrested for First-Degree Battery After Two Shot During Street Fight in Jonesboro

JONESBORO, Ark. — A woman faces a first-degree battery charge after a shooting Saturday night in Jonesboro.

Around 9:35 PM, officers responded to a large crowd at the 300 block of State Street, according to the update from JPD on social media. Officers found a victim with what they described as a minor injury. She was treated at the scene. The report suggested the suspect had fled.

A short time later, a male victim arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound related to the incident, JPD said. His injury was reported as non-life-threatening.

A short time after putting the initial report out, JPD updated that a suspect was apprehended and transported to the Craighead County Detention Center.

Chavelia Joyner, 33, was booked into custody at 12:05 AM on Sunday for first-degree battery, which encompasses charges involving a deadly weapon.

According to the probable cause affidavit, officers responded to the 300 block of State Street at 9:39 PM on August 2 about a shooting. Officers found a female victim with an injury to her right ankle that appeared to be a graze wound from a bullet. The victim stated that a large crowd was in the street, and several women began to physically fight. That’s when one of the females produced a gun and fired a single gunshot into the crowd. The victim stated the shooter got into a nearby SUV and fled after.

As officers responded, they learned another gunshot victim had arrived at a local hospital. A male had a gunshot wound to the left forearm. He stated he had been told by several people via text message that Chavelia was the one who had shot him. The second victim said he didn’t know her, but was dating her niece. He provided the address, the 1800 block of East Johnson.

Officers visited that location and noted a Nissan Armada registered to Joyner was at the residence. Joyner was reportedly not at the home but agreed to meet police at the department for an interview. However, she stated she had been drinking, and officers could not interview her. She was taken into custody.

On Monday, Judge Tommy Fowler set her bail at $100,000 cash or surety with no contact orders to protect the victims. Her next court appearance is set for Sept. 30.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
