Man Faces Charges After Allegedly Striking Officer, K9 with Rock

PARAGOULD, Ark. – A Paragould man is facing several serious charges after an encounter with police turned violent.

The probable cause affidavit says that on July 10, 2024, officers were dispatched in reference to an intoxicated individual “running around acting crazy.” Officers made contact with the potential defendant, Daniel Hernandez. Authorities reported he was “obviously heavily under the influence of intoxicants.”

The Paragould Police Department reported attempting to calm the man down and deescalate the situation for an hour. They hoped to provide medical assistance. However, they were unsuccessful.

Hernandez was also armed with two large rocks, the affidavit says. Authorities determined he was an “obvious” danger to himself or others with his level of impairment and decided to arrest the man.

Police said they made multiple commands for Hernandez to drop the large rocks but those were ignored. Officers deployed K9 officer Phantom to take him into custody. Hernandez allegedly struck the K9 in the head with one of the rocks. Officers went hands on and Hernandez reportedly struck Cpl. Mike Price in the head with the rock, causing a laceration over his left eye.

Hernandez faces a second degree battery charge against a law enforcement officer, a Class D felony. He is also charged with killing or injuring animals used by law enforcement, a Class D felony. Additional charges were filed including misdemeanor resisting arrest and public intoxication.
