Officer, Wife Arrested for Felony Theft in Alleged Check Scheme

PARAGOULD, Ark. – An Arkansas woman and her husband, a former sheriff’s deputy in Greene County and current officer in Gentry, are being charged with felony theft of property.

The probable cause affidavits released by the Greene County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) say that on or about July 1, 2023, Chasity Green was loaned $25,000 from a friend who wrote her a check. Chasity then had the check deposited into her husband’s bank account, which she is the joint owner of. The bank put a hold on the check until it cleared.

On August 11, 2023, Green reportedly contacted the victim via text to ask about getting another check written, since the first one hadn’t cleared the bank. Green allegedly stated to the victim that her husband, Matthew Green, was having her ask so they could get the money in their account. The victim told Green to meet her at the bank and she would just wire transfer the money to them. The affidavit says the parties met up and executed this plan.

Several days later, the victim noticed that the first check had cleared the bank. The affidavit alleges the Greens had lied to her and they actually ended up with $50,000 of her money.

The victim gave the Greens several attempts of a span of a few months to make it right but the affidavit says as of now, they have not made a resolution to the situation.

The GCSO Criminal Investigation Division received a report on December 27, 2023, alleging the theft of $25,000 and forgery of a check. The suspects, Matthew and Chasity Green, were acquainted with the victim. Following an exhaustive investigation, felony bench warrants were issued for their arrest.

In addition to that, another affidavit against Chasity Green alleges that in June 2023, she was house-sitting for her out of town friend. The homeowner was expecting an insurance packet in the mail that contained blank checks to a trust account. The affidavit says that Green told her friend the packet never arrived. The insurance company put a ‘Stop Payment’ on the checks and resent the packet with the next checks in the number sequence.

Then, on or around July 25, 2023, the victim received a stop-check confirmation notice in the mail from her insurance company. The victim was able to obtain a photocopy of the check. It was written out to Chasity Green and deposited into her husband’s bank account on July 3. The check number was one of the original fifteen that “never arrived.”

The Greens surrendered themselves to authorities Sunday night, April 21.

Chasity Green faces one count of Theft of Property, a Class B Felony, with a $25,000 cash-only bond, and one count of Forgery 2nd Degree, a Class C Felony, with a $50,000 cash or surety bond. Meanwhile, Matthew Green is charged with one count of Theft of Property, also a Class B Felony, with a $25,000 cash-only bond.

Matthew Green previously served with the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, joining in February 2020 and resigning in November 2023 to assume a School Resource Officer position with the Gentry Police Department in Benton County. He transitioned from a patrol deputy to the School Resource Officer role during his tenure with the sheriff’s office.

Due to Matthew Green’s prior employment with Greene County, he and his wife are currently being held at the Randolph County Detention Center in Pocahontas on the specified bond amounts.
