Scam Alert: Sheriff Deputy Impersonator Using Fake Phone Number

JONESBORO, Ark. – Scammers are always looking for new ways to take advantage of people and in Craighead County, the sheriff’s department is warning of the latest method.

An individual has been calling unsuspecting victims to claim he is Deputy Chris Kelems with the Craighead County Sheriff’s Office, according to a social media post by the department. The scammer says the victim had federal grand jury duty and missed it, and now they have a warrant out for their arrest. The scammer then asks for information over the phone.

Because the scammer has reportedly been using a caller ID spoof device, the phone number may show up as an actual number from the sheriff’s office.

“They are very convincing,” the post by the department says.

The sheriff’s department advises anyone who receives a call similar to this and who isn’t sure what to do to hang up, call the sheriff’s office and ask questions.
