Jonesboro, Ark., February 8th, 2021 – Two NEA Baptist Emergency Nurses were honored for their outstanding care to stroke patients in Northeast Arkansas. Dakota Robertson and Ashley Davis, both Registered Nurses in the NEA Baptist Emergency Department logged the fastest delivery of tPA in the state for the month of October and the second fastest delivery for the entire year.
Tissue Plasminogen Activator or tPA is designed to dissolve a clot causing ischemic stroke. Neurons are lost at a rate of 1.9 Million per minute; accelerating the aging process at a rate of 3.1 weeks per minute. These brain cells are non-regenerative.
The national standard is to administer tPA intravenously within 60 minutes of a patient arriving to the hospital. In October 2020, 38 patients received tPA in the state of Arkansas. Of those, only 4 received the medication within 30 minutes of arrival. The team in the NEA Baptist ED were able to administer tPA within 19 minutes which saved precious brain cells and increased both the length and quality of life for this patient. As compared to the national average, these nurses spared 77.9 Million cells which accounts for 2.5 years of accelerated aging.
Nearly 80 percent of stroke patients presenting to NEA Baptist Emergency Department in 2020 received tPA within 50 minutes of entering the facility. The speed and efficiency required to provide such a high standard of care is created through constant training and continuous improvement activities. NEA Baptist holds the designation as a Stroke Silver Plus with Honor Roll Elite by the American Heart Association for sustained high level achievement of providing exceptional care to patients in Northeast Arkansas.
