Man facing animal cruelty charge for shooting dog

JONESBORO, Ark. – A Craighead County man is facing a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty for shooting a dog he said he didn’t mean to hit.

It was reported around 1:50 p.m. on Wednesday when Deputy Robert Sharp with Craighead County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Craighead Road 339. He met with the dog’s owner, Terry Oswald, 36, and the man believed to have shot the dog, Christopher Sawyer, 33. The two live nearby on the same road.

Oswald said Sawyer shot his dog in Sawyer’s own back yard. Sawyer said he did not shoot the dog intentionally but he did fire in the direction of the dog.

Both Oswald and Sawyer took the dog to the vet to receive medical care and Sawyer said he would pay for the dog’s medical care.

Sawyer was cited to District Court for cruelty to animals. He is scheduled to appear at 1 p.m. on January 16.
