LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas — With white coats draped over their shoulders and a pledge to serve, the inaugural class of the Lyon College School of Dental Medicine stepped into their calling Friday during the program’s first-ever white coat ceremony at Second Presbyterian Church in Little Rock.
The ceremony marked a defining moment for the Class of 2028 as 80 first-year students at Arkansas’s first dental school received their white coats, symbolizing their transition into clinical training and their commitment to patient-centered care, ethics and professional integrity.
“Today is an important day in the history of these students and in their journey. It’s an important day for Arkansas and an important day for Lyon College,” said Dr. Burke Soffe, founding dean, in welcoming remarks. “In dentistry, the white coat ceremony represents the transition from learning about dentistry to beginning the journey of patient care.”
The Lyon College School of Dental Medicine will open its patient care clinics later this spring.
In addition to Dr. Soffe’s remarks, the program featured an invocation by the Rev. Maggie Alsup, Lyon College chaplain, and remarks from student leader Kaden King, strategic consultant Drew Ramey and Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs Dr. Ashley McMillan. The presentation of white coats was led by Dr. Jennifer Daniels, assistant dean of student affairs and admissions, and Dr. Mark Anderson, associate dean of academic affairs.
Students then recited the White Coat Pledge, led by Dr. Jeff “Jay” Powell, a 1994 graduate of Lyon College and central Arkansas dentist, affirming their commitment to ethical practice, patient trust and lifelong learning. The ceremony concluded with remarks from Lyon College President Dr. Melissa Taverner.
Friday’s event also signals a historic step for Lyon College as it continues to expand its health sciences programs and address critical workforce needs across Arkansas and the region.
