Police: Suspect Accused of Felony Fleeing After Turning Off Headlights and Running Stop Sign in Paragould

PARAGOULD, Ark. — A Paragould suspect was arrested after police say he fled from officers late Saturday night without headlights, then turned around head-on toward an officer before fleeing again.

According to a probable-cause affidavit, at around 11:58 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, an officer saw a silver car traveling west on Fairview Road at a high rate of speed and without headlights. When the officer attempted a traffic stop, the suspect made a U-turn at the intersection of Reynolds Road and Fairview Road, heading toward the officer.

Police said the suspect disregarded the officer and continued traveling east on Fairview Road. Officers turned around and pursued the vehicle, which continued fleeing at a high rate of speed with no lights.

The affidavit states the driver failed to stop at the intersection of Fairview Road and Highway 135 North before officers lost sight of the vehicle.

A short time later, officers located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop at Highway 49 and Purcell Road. The driver, identified as Dean Almquist, 21, was taken to the Paragould Police Department for questioning. Police said Almquist gave self-incriminating statements after being Mirandized.

Almquist is accused of felony fleeing and misdemeanor traffic violations. He also had warrants for failing to pay his fines, jail records show.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
