Defendant to Judge Setting Cash-Only Bond: “I Don’t Give a ****”

Man Accused of Assaulting Stepfather, Threatening Officer and Spitting on Police After Arrest

JONESBORO, Ark. — A suspect with what detectives described as a lengthy criminal history had plenty to say on Friday in Craighead County District Court.

James Anthony Convington, 32, of Jonesboro, is facing charges of second-degree domestic battering, a Class C felony, aggravated assault upon a law enforcement officer, and first-degree terroristic threatening, Class D felonies, as well as obstructing governmental operations and resisting arrest charges.

Convington appeared before Judge Tommy Fowler on Friday, Nov. 21, interrupting the judge constantly, which caused the audio to cut out on video court. However, enough could be heard to make out multiple expletives. After the tirade, Covington repeatedly asked the judge to set a bond.

Despite the defendant’s behavior, Judge Fowler did not flinch, setting bail at $25,000 cash-only. Notes show Detective Austin Morgan requested the cash-only bond due to a “lengthy, violent criminal history.” A no-contact order was also issued.

“I don’t give a ****,” Convington responded before walking off camera. The judge showed no reaction.

On Nov. 18, police say Covington went to his step-parents’ home in Jonesboro asking for money. When his stepfather told him to leave, Covington allegedly punched him in the face multiple times. Officers noted injuries to the victim’s lip and head.

Covington was found a short time later on Airport Road. Police say he tried to obstruct the investigation by claiming he was his “twin brother.” After being taken into custody, he reportedly refused to get in the patrol car and had to be wrestled inside. During transport, the officer says Covington made threats to kill him and his family. Once at the jail, Covington allegedly spat on a Jonesboro officer.

His next court date in this case is January 23, 2025.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
