PARAGOULD, Ark. — A report to the Paragould Police Department (PPD) alleging an inappropriate relationship has resulted in the arrest of a man on felony and misdemeanor charges.
Matthew Whitley, 18, of Paragould, was arrested on Monday, Sept. 9 on charges including second-degree sexual assault, a Class B felony; sexual indecency with a child, a Class D felony; and sexually grooming a child, a Class A misdemeanor.
The probable cause affidavit says that a report was made to PPD referencing Whitley allegedly “having an ongoing inappropriate relationship with a juvenile female.”
Detectives reviewed the evidence and detained Whitley for an interview. According to the affidavit, after he waived his Miranda rights, Whitley made several incriminating statements that would violate the Arkansas State statutes for the charges listed above.
On Wednesday, Sept. 11, Judge Dan Stidham found probable cause to hold Whitley on the charges. Bail was set at $25,000 cash-only. A no-contact order was also issued.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
