Police Release Details About Armed Barricaded Subject Call on Tuesday

JONESBORO, Ark. – Police have released more information about an incident on Tuesday in Jonesboro where a man entered a microbrewery/pub with a gun, barricaded himself inside the bathroom, and took his own life.

About 3 PM on July 9, the Jonesboro Police Department was notified of a customer that seemed unstable at Native Brew Works, a microbrewery and pub on Gee Street near Washington Avenue in Jonesboro. The staff thought he had a weapon on him. They later discovered he did have a weapon because he lifted up his shirt and showed it to them.

According to JPD’s Sally Smith, at some point, staff refused to serve him a drink. That was when they showed him the gun.

He proceeded to go into the bathroom alone, police were told. At 3:03 PM, officers Vanhouten and Kelemen arrived on the scene, with Officer Gonzalez arriving seconds later. As the officers were entering, they heard a bang. They couldn’t confirm the source and there were still some people in there, police said. The location was evacuated.

Police managed to get his phone number and tried to call his phone but received no answer. Smith said authorities recorded no other sounds similar to a gunshot after the noise heard upon entry by the first officers.

About 4:22 PM, JPD made entry into the bathroom. Police confirmed he was deceased.

Jonathan Ramey Drum, 34, of Jonesboro, was identified Wednesday as the subject who passed away.

Our thoughts and prayers are with both the family of the deceased and the employees, patrons, and owners at Native Brew Works.

After the incident, Native closed for the remainder of Tuesday and remained closed on Wednesday, as well. The establishment issued a statement thanking JPD for handling the situation with care and said as they work to process events, they will update the public on plans to reopen.
