Corning Police Chase Ends in Arrest, Discovery of Drugs and Firearms

CORNING, Ark. – On the morning of March 18, 2024, a routine traffic stop by an officer with the Corning Police Department escalated into a high-speed pursuit, leading to a dramatic conclusion in Poplar Bluff, Missouri.

The incident unfolded around 4:30 am when an officer attempted to pull over a speeding vehicle entering the city of Corning at a staggering 90 mph, a press release from the police department said. Instead of complying, the vehicle evaded the officer, initiating a pursuit that reached speeds exceeding 130 mph. The suspects behind the wheel resorted to turning off their headlights intermittently in an attempt to shake off law enforcement.

The chase came to a halt in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, when the suspect vehicle, in a desperate attempt to evade capture, turned off its headlights and tried to execute a U-turn on PP Highway. However, the attempt ended in a collision between the suspect’s vehicle and the officer’s vehicle.

Following the crash, three suspects fled on foot from the Corning officer. Despite their efforts, law enforcement managed to apprehend one of the occupants shortly after, with the assistance of the Poplar Bluff Police Department. Identified as 22-year-old Nathaniel Garrett from Florissant, Missouri, the suspect was taken into custody and subsequently extradited back to Arkansas.

Upon searching the suspect vehicle, authorities uncovered a significant quantity of illicit substances, including approximately 4.5 pounds of marijuana and less than 2 grams of a Schedule 2 controlled substance. Additionally, officers seized two loaded firearms and $5,580 in cash.

Garrett now faces a litany of charges, including possession of a controlled substance (Schedule 6) with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance (Schedule 2) in a quantity less than 2 grams, simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms, possession of firearms by certain persons, and fleeing from law enforcement.

District Judge Dan Stidham has ordered Garrett to be held at the Clay County Detention Center without bond pending further legal proceedings.
