Updated: Man Arrested after Wednesday Shooting in Jonesboro

JONESBORO, Ark. – Authorities in Jonesboro are investigating a shooting incident that left one injured and another in custody Wednesday in Jonesboro.

Jonesboro Police Department officers were notified of a shooting incident around 7:50 AM Wednesday, JPD’s Public Information Specialist Sally Smith said. Police located the victim in his vehicle at the 2000-block of Johnson Avenue. EMS arrived on the scene and began treating the male victim, whose name has not been released, for non-life-threatening injuries.

At the same time, officers were searching for the actual shooting scene, according to Smith. After further investigation, information revealed the initial shooting took place on Melrose Street.

Witnesses provided officers with a suspect description. Police quickly apprehended the suspect, 31-year-old Marquawn Fletcher.

Fletcher was arrested on a felony first degree battery charge. He is being held at the Craighead County Detention Center until his probable cause hearing.

This is the second time Fletcher has been arrested this week for battery. He was booked into the detention center early February 13 on a second degree battery charge after he is alleged to have attacked a medical worker.

The police report said that Fletcher was being held in St. Bernards care for a 72-hour mental health evaluation hold when he decided to leave. One of the medical staff intervened by grabbing him from behind when Fletcher is alleged to have thrown his head back, headbutting the victim in the face. Fletcher is said in the report to have taken a fighting stance but the situation deescalated. Police were called and took custody of Fletcher.

However, the victim decided not to pursue charges based on the “mental status” of the arrestee, the report says. Due to this, Fletcher was released.

JPD confirmed it was the same individual in both cases.
