Update: All Judges Recuse in Anderson v. City of Jonesboro Case

JONESBORO, Ark. –  Every judge that hears cases in Craighead County Circuit Court has now recused from the case of Rachel Anderson v. the City of Jonesboro, its mayor, and police chief.

The story was continously being updated with each wave of recusals.

Latest Update: 3:45 PM, January 4, 2024

Number of Judges Recused: TWELVE (12)

Circuit Judge Kimberly Bibb signed the order of recusal on Dec. 29. It was not filed until 12:28 PM on January 2, 2024.

The clerk next randomly assigned the case to Judge Dan Ritchey, Division 10. At 1:28 PM, he also signed an order of recusal in the case.

The next judge assigned to the case was Circuit Judge Scott Ellington, Division 12. At 2:48 PM, he, too, filed an order of recusal in the case.

The next assignment of the case was to Judge Mary Lile Broadaway, Division 7. Her order of recusal was filed at 8:56 PM, wrapping up January 2’s activity.

The case was assigned on January 3 to Judge Tonya Alexander, Division 6. She filed an order of recusal at 10:50 AM.

At 11:10 AM, Paragould-based Circuit Judge Randy Philhours, Division 11, was assigned the case. At 1:12 PM on January 4, Philhours recused from the case.

At 1:35 PM, the clerk next assigned the case to Judge Chris Thyer, Division 3. At 3:10 PM, he recused from the case.

At 3:16 PM, the case was assigned to Judge Keith Chrestman, Division 4. At 3:23 PM, Chrestman recused from the case.

A special judge will be appointed to the case next by the Arkansas Supreme Court.

The case is presently awaiting a decision on a preliminary injunction request sought by Anderson to force a name-clearing hearing with the city.
