Man arrested for firing gun on front porch while intoxicated

JONESBORO, Ark. – A man was arrested Friday in Jonesboro after authorities say he fired his gun several times on the front porch.

It happened just before 8 AM on April 7 at the 5000-block of Lynette Drive. Multiple officers responded to a report of shots fired, with Officer Scottie Fleeman taking an overwatch position with his patrol rifle on the parked police unit closest to the residence while other officers approached. Officers knocked on the door and took a male suspect, Eloy Rivera, 37, of Jonesboro, into custody.

Police spoke with those present to learn more. First, Rivera told police it was his son who fired the gunshots. The officer noted smelling a strong odor of intoxicants coming from Rivera, who admitted to having several shots of tequila. But when officers spoke with witnesses, multiple people said Rivera was the person on the front porch firing a weapon.

Rivera was transported to the Craighead County Detention Center on charges of discharging a firearm in the city limits, public intoxication, and disorderly conduct – all misdemeanor charges. An involuntary hold was also placed on him for a mental health evaluation. Jail records show he was released Sunday afternoon.

Officers confiscated several firearms from the residence, although the visible portion of the report did not make clear which was fired Friday morning: a black handgun, a silver-slide/black frame handgun, a wood stocked rifle, a black AR without a stock, an AR with folding brace, and numerous boxes of ammunition.
