Police impersonators calling Jonesboro residents once again

JONESBORO, Ark. – If you get a phone call from a purported police officer telling you to pay a fine with a gift card, it’s a scam.

A recent report from a victim in Jonesboro detailed such an incident. The victim received a voicemail from Sgt. Rodney (RJ) Smith using the number 870-804-8812. The detective called the number back and it went to a generic voicemail.

Apparently, the phony officers have told victims they must pay their fine by purchasing a gift card and sending the details in. Under no circumstances will a legitimate officer of the law ever ask you to do this.

But don’t be too quick to hang up.

JPD says they want you to gather as much information as possible regarding the scam calls and provide the real officers of Jonesboro with those details.

In Arkansas, criminal impersonation in the first degree is a Class D felony when the subject, “pretends that he or she is a law enforcement officer when the person is not a law enforcement officer.” (Source)
