JONESBORO, Ark. – A man is accused of trying to steal pork while drunk at Bill’s Cost Plus on Johnson Avenue in Jonesboro.
William Nicholas Edwards, 46, of Jonesboro, was arrested Saturday after police responded to Bill’s for a disturbance. The report said Edwards came into the store and was seen by staff taking a plastic bag from the register, walking to the back of the store, and returning to the front with a bag full of various meat products.
An 18-year-old store employee stopped him and asked for a receipt but said the man tried to push past him to get out of the store. Witnesses said Edwards elbowed the store employee in the jaw during the struggle. That’s when other witnesses stepped in, pinning Edwards to the ground and calling 911.
Police arrived to find witnesses holding the suspect down between the end register and the front door. As the officer took Edwards into custody, he reported the man reeked of alcohol.
Edwards was transported to Craighead County Detention Center for public intoxication and shoplifting, less than $1,000 (both misdemeanors).
