JONESBORO, Ark. – A man is accused of fleeing police after running a stop sign and when police caught up to him, they reported finding drugs on him.
It started at 10:57 p.m. in Jonesboro, when Officer Heath Loggains with Jonesboro Police Department was traveling southbound on State Street when he noticed a black 2008 Ford Explorer make a right turn from Cedar Heights onto State Street. As Loggains turned his patrol vehicle around to conduct a traffic stop on the SUV, he noticed it turn from State onto Belt Street without stopping for a stop sign, once again. The chase begins here.
Loggains watched the vehicle go through the intersection of Belt Street and Greensboro Road so fast, it flew into the air for a brief moment, leaving the roadway. The vehicle continued through the intersection of Belt and Patrick Street at a high rate of speed. Loggains lost visual contact with the SUV as it went around the curve of Belt and Fisher.
The officer noticed black tire marks on the sidewalk at that intersection and the fence on the south side of Hoover and Fisher was torn down. Still looking for the location of the suspect vehicle, the officer was alerted by a nearby lady. She yelled that the vehicle traveled west of Hoover Street. Loggains then found the vehicle, empty, at the 400-block of Drake.
He then deployed his K-9 partner, Cash, to track the suspect driver. The canine companion tracked east to a wooded area. A nearby officer radioed the male was running northbound. Officer Dalton Shannon shouted for the suspect, Chris Larel Howard, 47, of Jonesboro, to stop running or he would be bit by the canine. He said Howard would look back for the K-9 but then continue running. Eventually, Officer Bryan Davis caught up and overtook Howard. He was taken into custody without further incident, the report said.
When authorities apprehended Howard, they reported finding 25 Hydrocodone pills. He was arrested on felony charges of possession of a schedule I or II substance and fleeing, along with warrants for contempt of court for non-compliance and non-payment of fines. He was transported to Craighead County Detention Center.
The SUV was towed by 1 Stop Towing.
