Jonesboro Man Arrested After Teen Grazed by Gunfire

A Jonesboro man was arrested on a first-degree battery allegation after a shooting left a 17-year-old with a graze wound to his ankle, according to police and jail records.

JONESBORO, Ark. — A Jonesboro man was arrested Friday in connection with a shooting that left a 17-year-old with a graze wound to his left ankle, according to a Jonesboro Police Department report and jail records.

Jakarius Lamont Clay, 20, was listed on the jail roster on allegations of first-degree battery and nonpayment of fines. The roster lists his arrest as Oct. 16.

The police report’s incident summary places the shooting on Westwood Drive between 4:30 and 4:35 p.m. Oct. 16. It describes suspects firing a handgun at people while driving away from the area.

According to an officer’s narrative, people at the scene reported hearing numerous shots and seeing a red pickup truck fleeing at a high rate of speed. They also told officers they believed someone inside a nearby residence had been shot.

Officers approached the residence to check for victims. One officer reported seeing a man in the backyard quickly move around a corner out of sight after seeing police. Two men later came out the front of the residence, according to the narrative.

The report describes the teen’s injury as a laceration caused by gunfire grazing his left ankle and classifies it as a minor injury.

Police listed a bullet and a bullet fragment recovered from Westwood Drive among the evidence. The property inventory also lists two seized 9 mm handguns: a Smith & Wesson Shield and a Taurus G3.

The report lists another adult and a juvenile as arrestees. Most investigative narratives were redacted from the copy provided to NEA Report.

The report also lists aggravated assault and leaving the scene of a property-damage accident among the offenses under investigation. Charging decisions are ultimately up to the prosecutor assigned to the case.

Bond has not yet been set for the suspect.

This report will be updated after the suspect’s 8.1 hearing with bond and other information.
