JONESBORO, Ark. — A Craighead County man is accused of chasing another driver and intentionally striking the vehicle from behind before both vehicles ended up off the roadway.
Calvin Wayne Simmons faces charges of aggravated assault on a family or household member, a Class D felony, and reckless driving, a Class C misdemeanor. Court records show his bond was set at $25,000 cash or surety.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Craighead County deputies were dispatched Sept. 8 to the area of County Roads 191 and 192 for a two-vehicle crash. Deputies reported finding a green Dodge Dakota with severe front-end damage backed into a field and a silver passenger car with rear-end damage in a ditch. Emergency medical personnel were providing care to the other driver.
Deputies said Simmons was walking toward them when they arrived. After he was placed in handcuffs, investigators asked what happened.
According to the affidavit, Simmons told deputies, “I was trying to catch her” and “I hit her.”
The other driver told deputies there had been an argument before leaving the residence and that Simmons began following the vehicle. The driver reportedly believed Simmons had been lost during the chase and slowed while approaching a semi-truck and trailer on County Road 191.
Investigators said Simmons then struck the vehicle from behind.
The semi-truck driver told deputies he saw the silver car approaching from behind before it suddenly disappeared from the roadway. A short time later, the witness saw the damaged Dodge Dakota and the two people arguing near the crash scene, according to the affidavit.
A judge found probable cause for the charges. Simmons was ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim as part of his pretrial release conditions.
All suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
