JONESBORO, Ark. — A woman faces a felony shoplifting charge after police said she intentionally spilled a large fountain drink to distract store employees before stealing about 10 Slim Jim beef jerky sticks.
A Jonesboro police officer responded Tuesday, Aug. 11, to a business in the 1700 block of East Johnson Avenue following a shoplifting complaint.
Surveillance footage allegedly showed Tanya Reynolds spilling the drink on the store floor, according to a probable cause affidavit.
While employees cleaned the spill, Reynolds reportedly walked to a display containing Slim Jims, took several items and quickly left without paying.
Police identified Reynolds from the surveillance footage. A criminal history check showed she was convicted in April 2023 of theft of a credit or debit card, the affidavit said.
Because of the previous theft conviction, Reynolds was charged with theft of property valued at $1,000 or less, second offense. The charge is a Class D felony punishable by up to six years in prison.
Reynolds appeared Wednesday, Aug. 12, before Circuit Judge Tommy Fowler. Her bond was set at $10,000 cash or surety. Court notes cited her theft history and a previous failure to appear.
The public defender’s office was appointed to represent Reynolds. Her next court appearance is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Sept. 30 at the Craighead County Courthouse.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
