JONESBORO, Ark. — A domestic disturbance at a Jonesboro apartment led to a felony charge after police said a defendant hit and kicked a 70-year-old relative.
Tyrhanie Charday Barnett is charged with second-degree domestic battering causing physical injury, a Class B felony.
Officers responded Thursday, Aug. 6, to an apartment on Links Circle, according to a probable cause affidavit. The alleged victim told police Barnett became angry after being asked to have a friend leave the residence.
While yelling, Barnett allegedly climbed onto the chair where the victim was sitting and hit the victim in the face. Barnett then allegedly kicked the victim in the knee and shin.
Officers reported seeing redness on the victim’s face and swelling around the lower left knee and shin. Police said the injuries were consistent with the victim’s account.
Because the alleged victim was 70, police elevated the allegation to second-degree domestic battering. Barnett was taken to the Craighead County Detention Center.
Barnett appeared Friday, Aug. 7, before Circuit Judge Tommy Fowler. Fowler set bond at $75,000 cash or surety and issued a no-contact order. The public defender was appointed to represent Barnett.
The charge is punishable by five to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $15,000. Barnett’s next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 30.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
