Man Accused of Driving Juveniles From Scene of Fatal Walker Place Shooting

JONESBORO, Ark. — A Jonesboro man faces multiple felony allegations after police said he drove three juveniles to an alleged marijuana robbery that ended with a man being shot multiple times.

Lewis Calvin Harris, 29, was arrested July 13 on two counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a minor and one count of tampering with physical evidence, all Class D felonies. He also faces two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a Class A misdemeanor.

Jonesboro police responded July 12 to a shooting at an apartment on Walker Place. Investigators believe three suspects went to the apartment to purchase marijuana, according to a probable cause affidavit.

After the victim showed them the marijuana, the suspects allegedly produced handguns and an AR-style rifle in an attempt to rob him. Police said a struggle followed and the victim was shot multiple times. The victim was transported to a hospital, where he later died.

Surveillance footage showed a black Chevrolet pickup entering Walker Place around 10:55 p.m. and returning to pick up the suspects around 11:11 p.m., the affidavit said. Police tracked the truck through intersection cameras to an address on French Street.

Investigators identified two juvenile suspects, while another suspect remained unidentified when the affidavit was written.

Police later found the pickup unoccupied at another address. Three adults at the location allegedly said Harris left the truck there the morning after the shooting. One woman told investigators Harris asked her to keep the truck, according to the affidavit.

During an interview with police, Harris allegedly said his stepson and two of his stepson’s friends asked him to take them to Walker Place to purchase marijuana. Harris said he dropped them off near the apartment complex before noticing police and moving his truck.

Harris told investigators he then heard gunfire and saw the juveniles running toward his pickup. Surveillance footage allegedly showed the truck leaving at a high rate of speed. Police said Harris admitted dropping off two of the juveniles before taking his stepson home.

Harris’ bond was set at $25,000 cash or surety. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 30.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
