BATESVILLE, Ark. — State and federal bomb squads responded after a possible hand grenade was discovered Wednesday among debris from a Batesville house fire.
The Batesville Fire Department initially responded Tuesday evening to a house fire on Broadwater Lane and extinguished the blaze, according to a news release from the Batesville Police Department.
During cleanup efforts the following day, a member of the homeowners’ family found what appeared to be a hand grenade. Authorities did not immediately know whether the device was live or inert.
Shortly afterward, the fire reignited, prompting firefighters to return to the property. Once officials learned about the suspected explosive device, police began coordinating with fire personnel at the scene.
Because of the potential danger, firefighters operated from a safe distance while working to protect a nearby home and the surrounding area.
The Arkansas State Police Bomb Squad and FBI Bomb Squad were called to assist with the device. Police praised the bomb squads and fire department for their rapid response and cooperation.
Authorities did not disclose whether the device was ultimately determined to be live or provide additional information about its origin.
