PARAGOULD, Ark. — A Paragould woman faces felony animal cruelty charges after police said two dogs were found malnourished during extreme heat.
Lanie Gleason, 21, was arrested by the Paragould Police Department on two counts of aggravated cruelty to a dog, cat or horse, both Class D felonies.
According to a reasonable cause affidavit, Paragould officers were dispatched July 4 to the area of South Sixth Street regarding a dog attack.
When officers arrived, they found two dogs in front of a property. During the investigation, officers learned the dogs had been staying in a small 4-by-4 kennel in the backyard of a residence and had dug themselves out, according to the affidavit.
Neighbors told officers the people who lived at the residence had left the dogs in the kennel and had been gone for a while. Officers noted there was no food or water inside the kennel.
Paragould animal control was called to the scene. According to the affidavit, animal control documented that the temperature was 96 degrees, with a heat index of 105. Animal control also noted both dogs were malnourished.
The owner was contacted by phone and told officers they were a couple of hours away and could not get home anytime soon, according to the affidavit. Due to the dogs’ condition and the extreme heat, animal control took both dogs into protective custody.
On July 7, Gleason was interviewed at the police department. During a Mirandized interview, police said she admitted to knowingly leaving the dogs outside in the kennel during the heat advisory. According to the affidavit, she said they left Friday, July 3, and did not plan to return until later Saturday afternoon.
Bond was set at $10,000. Gleason was also ordered not to possess any animals.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
