Craighead County Jail Logged 37 ICE Holds in 2025, Records Show

JONESBORO, Ark. — Approximately 37 immigration holds were placed on inmates at the Craighead County Detention Center in 2025, according to figures obtained by NEA Report from the Craighead County Sheriff’s Office.

The total is considered approximate because the holds had to be counted manually, officials said.

Of the 37 immigration holds, 35 inmates were released into the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. One inmate was transferred to the Arkansas Department of Corrections. One inmate remains in the county jail.

An immigration hold, commonly referred to as an ICE hold, can be placed on an inmate following any misdemeanor or felony arrest. When a hold is active, the inmate is not released from custody, even if bond is set, until ICE takes custody or the hold is otherwise resolved.

The sheriff’s office did not provide additional demographic details about the inmates subject to the holds.

  1. Thanks for the reporting.

An analysis that would go a long way towards clearing the fog from the new Sheriff pining for a new jail is the recidivism or rearrest rate of the early releases from the jail. There does not appear to be any proof that the intensive management of inmates is failing. It appears to be a good news story on its face, with the exception of the physical condition of the facility.

Reporting could include the impact of ending the 309 program, for beds and for finances. Also, what about the high school students fabricating bunks for the jail?

    Thanks, Stan.
