JONESBORO, Ark. — A Craighead County man is accused of running over a utility box with a tractor and burning copper wire to sell for scrap, according to a probable cause affidavit filed after a June 13 incident.
On June 13, 2025, Craighead County deputies responded to the 2000 block of Craighead County Road 905 regarding a theft that had already occurred, according to the probable cause affidavit. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with an employee of AT&T who said they were attempting to fix phone damage for customers when he located a box and cable that appeared to be damaged and stolen.
Deputies observed that the AT&T utility box had been run over and destroyed, and the cable pulled from the ground. There were still tools lying around the area, with tractor tire tracks leading from the box to the campers parked on the property.
At that point, officers made contact with Chance Brooks in front of one of the campers. While gathering information, deputies said Brooks stated without being asked that he “accidentally ran over the cable box.” Brooks reportedly said he hit the box with a tractor, then pulled the cable out of the ground with the tractor.
Deputies observed on the back end of the tractor was a tow strap and what appeared to be mangled copper wiring.
Brooks then allegedly said he burned the copper wire because he planned on scrapping it for money. He took the deputies to the area where the wire was burned. Deputies observed the copper wiring lying in two separate burn piles.
Chance W. Brooks, 34, of Jonesboro, faces charges including first-degree criminal mischief and theft, greater than $1,000 but less than $5,000, both class D felonies. Bail was set Monday, June 16, at $5,000 cash or surety.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
