Jonesboro launches Destination 100K initiative to plan for city’s next population milestone
JONESBORO, Ark. — Speaking to a capacity crowd in the Embassy Suites Convention Center on Wednesday, Mayor Harold Copenhaver introduced a bold, new initiative aimed at better preparing Jonesboro for the stress and strain inevitable population growth will put on city infrastructure.
The mayor invited viewers to join in the journey of planning and preparation for “Destination 100K,” as the initiative is called, because “Ready or not, it’s coming for Jonesboro,” he said.
“Join us in putting words into works,” Copenhaver said. “Destination 100K will be here before we know it, and working together, we’ll all be ready.”
Jonesboro is one of fastest growing areas in Arkansas, and the mayor stressed the need to be intentional about the city’s path to the next major population milestone.
“Every city of 100,000 was once at 82,000,” he said, noting Jonesboro’s current population. The time to grasp and start preparing for the scale and practicalities of being a city that size is now, he said, because “When we plan as a community, we prosper.”
To better position the city to handle long-term expansion, Destination 100K implementation will also include major planning steps such as the funding of a thorough engineering and infrastructure Master Growth Plan, which will incorporate the city’s connectivity blueprint and the award-winning Parks’s
Master Plan as well as an update of the city’s current master street plan.
As in previous State of the City addresses, Copenhaver touched on several topics, including city beautification efforts, youth programs, public safety, infrastructure and pedestrian projects, quality of life improvements and commercial and residential development.
The mayor also presented a Key to the City to Mary Housewright for her work with Project SEARCH and Project CARE to help individuals with developmental disabilities gain confidence and learn skills to create pathways to independence and opportunities to secure meaningful employment.

I can’t believe anyone would listen to this clown spout his nonsense
Nothing about crime and especially crime by LEOs like off duty police maiming citizens? Since he doesn’t have to worry about reelection for a while why bother with little stuff like that?
