MARIANNA, Ark. — An inmate who escaped from the Brinkley Police Department detention center Thursday was captured Friday at a farm shop in Lee County, according to Arkansas State Police.
Members of the agency’s Emergency Response Team located Rodney Smith, 41, at 12:36 p.m. Oct. 30. He was taken into custody without incident.
Smith was a passenger in a vehicle at a farm shop on Lee County Road 310, state police said. Smith and the driver, identified as Marshall Jones, were taken into custody and questioned at the Lee County Sheriff’s Office before being transported to the Arkansas Division of Correction’s East Arkansas Regional Unit in Brickeys.
The release did not specify any charges against Jones.
State police said Smith escaped Thursday morning after allegedly assaulting law enforcement personnel and taking an officer’s Taser before fleeing on foot. He had been held at the Brinkley detention center while awaiting bed space with the Division of Correction.
The search involved multiple state and federal agencies, including state police emergency response personnel, criminal investigators, Troop D troopers and the agency’s aircraft section.
Brinkley police, the U.S. Marshals Service, Arkansas Community Correction, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, and Department of Corrections K-9 and drone teams also assisted.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
