WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. — Several bicycles have been given new life around the Williams Baptist University campus, thanks to an act of kindness by a WBU alumnus.

Thomas Martin, a 1977 alum, recently returned to WBU for a workday, where he joined other volunteers on various projects. While on campus, Thomas noticed several bicycles in disrepair. Recognizing their potential value to students, he took them home to his residence in Alma, Ark., where he meticulously repaired each one.

Once restored, he brought them back to campus, ready for student use. WBU plans to make several of the repaired bicycles available for check-out, ensuring they benefit many students.

One of the bicycles belongs to WBU student Jason Detrick of Maumelle, Ark., who expressed his heartfelt gratitude. “I appreciate the kindness and sacrifice that you have put into all of our bicycles,” Detrick said.

When asked about his motivation, Thomas said he simply wanted to give back to Williams and encourage others to give.

WBU serves as the northern trailhead for the Lawrence County Rail-Trail, a paved walking and bicycling trail that extends 6 1/2 miles through Walnut Ridge and into Hoxie.

Williams is a private, Christian university in Walnut Ridge.
