Jonesboro Officer Responding to Manhunt Hit Head-On by DWI Suspect

JONESBORO, Ark. — An already extraordinary report of a manhunt for a suspect accused of shooting at a judge and law enforcement became even more unusual when a responding officer from Jonesboro was struck in a head-on collision by a suspected drunk driver.

Sgt. Brian Arnold of the Jonesboro Police Department responded to Poinsett County to assist in the Friday night, August 23 search. He was traveling in an unmarked car. Dispatch logs show at 10:09 PM, Arnold radioed that he had been involved in a head-on collision in front of the Busch-Agri railroad tracks on U.S. 49, according to dispatch logs.

Fortunately, Sgt. Arnold was “okay” after the accident, according to JPD Public Information Specialist Sally Smith.

The driver who allegedly caused the accident is suspected of drunk driving, Smith confirmed. One arrest was made in connection with the incident.

The Craighead County Detention Center’s online roster recorded a driving while intoxicated arrest being booked into the jail not long after the accident. JPD confirmed Juan Domingo Lainez, 21, was arrested for DWI related to this incident.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
