Fatal Shooting in Monette Under Investigation; Off-Duty Officer Involved

MONETTE, Ark. – The sheriff’s office is investigating a fatal shooting involving an off-duty police officer from over the weekend in Monette.

One person was killed late Sunday in the shooting incident in Monette, Craighead County Sheriff Marty Boyd told NEA Report.

Chief Deputy Justin Roland said around 11:30 PM Sunday night, 911 dispatch received calls about a domestic disturbance on County Road 506, at an address which is in the Monette city limits. The Monette Police Department responded and found a white male outside of the residence with gunshot wounds. They began life-saving measures and contacted EMS. However, the male succumbed to his injuries.

Monette police requested the Craighead County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division take the lead on the case. Investigators were in questioning Monday morning and afternoon regarding the incident, with Roland mentioning three investigators working on the case.

The person believed to have fired the gunshots is an off-duty Trumann police officer, Roland said.

The Trumann Police Department Chief of Police Jon Redman confirmed the officer involved, Brett Williams, is currently employed by the TPD. Williams is currently on administrative leave pending a professional standards review by Redman, which will be completed after the sheriff’s office completes their investigation.

Roland said once the sheriff’s department finishes their investigation, the file will be turned over to the prosecutor’s office.

The name of the deceased has not been released by authorities pending notification of next of kin.
