Clay County Jailer Arrested for Alleged Theft of Inmate’s Debit Card

CLAY COUNTY, Ark. – An employee of the Clay County Detention Center finds himself on the wrong side of the law after he was arrested this week for allegedly stealing an inmate’s debit card and using it.

Jason Jeffries, 19, of Piggott, was arrested on December 28, a release posted to social media by Sheriff Ronnie Cole said.

It began on December 23 when the Clay County Detention Center became aware that an inmate’s debit card was missing. The sheriff’s department initiated an investigation into the disappearance of the card. On December 28, it was discovered that a jailer had failed to comply with the established policies and procedures regarding an inmate and their personal property.

Once authorities dug deeper, they learned the jailer had used the inmate’s card to withdraw funds from the inmate’s bank account.

Jeffries faces felony charges of fraudulent use of a credit or debit card and theft of property.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department also has announced two full-time job openings for the position of jailer.
