JONESBORO, Ark. – A chaotic incident unfolded between midnight and 1 AM on October 21 in the 1800-block of East Johnson Avenue in Jonesboro.
Officer Dalynn Johnson initially responded to a call in which 20-30 individuals were involved in a heated altercation, with emotions running high. Several other officers also responded.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers managed to deescalate the situation and subsequently interviewed witnesses to piece together the events. According to information provided by witnesses, the conflicts appeared to be mutual and were triggered by the consumption of alcohol. Marcus C. Reed, 33, and Jessica Reed, 31, reportedly attacked Mason Miller, 21, of Madison, using wooden boards. Miller, in turn, was alleged to have retaliated.
Initially, all three individuals were arrested on felony charges of aggravated assault. However, on Monday, these charges were amended to misdemeanor first-degree assault for Marcus C. Reed, Jessica Reed, and Mason Miller. Police noted the incident does not constitute felony charges, instead issuing citations for first degree assault due to them acting in a reckless manor that could have resulted in serious injury.
In addition to the assault charges, Jessica Reed faces further legal repercussions. She is also charged with disorderly conduct and public intoxication. Marcus C. Reed faces a series of charges, including resisting arrest, public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and interference with a law enforcement officer.
The police report on the incident notes that during their transportation to the jail, both Marcus C. Reed and Jessica Reed directed racial slurs at a white police officer. Jessica Reed was quoted as saying that this is why she “hate white people.”
