Greene County inmate attempts escape, sheriff says

PARAGOULD, Ark. – Authorities had a busy day Wednesday in Greene County.

At approximately 10:20 a.m. Wednesday, a release from the sheriff says two transport deputies left the jail with an inmate bound for a Little Rock hospital for mental health treatment. The inmate was handcuffed and shackled for the trip.

When the transport vehicle reached the area of Hoxie, the whole trip changed. The release says the inmate was able to dislodge a seat head-rest from the vehicle and began attempting to break out a window in an attempt to escape from the moving vehicle.

Deputies immediately changed course and proceeded back to Hoxie in order to seek assistance from Lawrence County authorities, all while attempting to prevent the inmate from hurting themselves or the deputies, the sheriff said. The transport deputies were able to make it back into Hoxie and received assistance from local law enforcement.

Once officers were able to regain control of the inmate and re-secured him in a patrol unit, the transport to Little Rock was continued and the inmate was turned over safely to hospital authorities, according to the release.

I would like to thank our friends at the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, Hoxie PD, Walnut Ridge PD, Black Rock PD, and the Arkansas State Police for their quick response and assistance with this matter. Furthermore, I would like to commend my transport deputies for keeping their calm and handling this situation properly so that all parties were able to come out of this situation unscathed.

Sheriff Brad Snyder
