JONESBORO, Ark. – A police stand-off ended with what appears to have been a suicide Monday in Jonesboro.
Around 9:30 a.m., Jonesboro Police attempted to make a traffic stop on a Mazda SUV driven by an older, white male. The subject failed to stop and JPD terminated the attempted stop, the department said in a release.
The vehicle was later located backed into a driveway on Allis St.
Officers approached the vehicle to engage the driver and during the course of the conversation, the subject produced a handgun, racked the slide to chamber a round, and pointed the gun at himself. Officers backed away from the vehicle and secured the scene as additional units arrived.
JPD began negotiating with the driver that continued for over an hour until officers heard what sounded like a gunshot and observed the individual slumped over in his seat.
To ensure officer safety, less-lethal beanbags were utilized to breach the tinted side window which gave them the opportunity to check the subject and locate the gun on the floor of the vehicle. Officers and EMS were on the scene to render aid but found the subject unresponsive. EMS verified the man had passed away.
CID was called in to process the scene. The body will be sent to the State Crime Lab.
