JONESBORO, Ark. — A man accused of stealing religious ceremonial oil and blocking a surveillance camera with an umbrella during a burglary Friday, Oct. 23, had his bond set at $50,000 cash or surety Monday.
Haskel White faces allegations of commercial burglary, a Class C felony, and theft of property valued at $1,000 or less from a building, listed in court records as a second offense and a Class D felony.
According to a probable cause affidavit, officers responded to a burglary in progress in the 1100 block of Strawfloor Drive. Police allege White entered the building by pushing in a window on its west side.
Officers found religious ceremonial oil at the scene that White admitted taking from the building, the affidavit states.
A witness told detectives that a base station and sensor for a SimpliSafe alarm system were missing. According to the affidavit, the witness saw White on camera footage holding the base station in the building’s foyer before he used an umbrella to block the camera.
Neither piece of alarm equipment was found during a check of the building, investigators wrote.
District Judge Tommy Fowler found probable cause to detain White and set his bond Oct. 26. A handwritten note on the court paperwork cited a “very long history” of breaking or entering, theft and failures to appear.
White was appointed a public defender. His next court appearance is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Dec. 16 in Craighead County Circuit Court.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
