HARRISBURG, Ark. – A manhunt was underway in Poinsett County Friday after an inmate managed to deceive guards into mistakenly releasing him from custody.
He was back in custody shortly before 1 AM Saturday.
Chad Dewayne Costner, 31, walked out of the Poinsett County Detention Center after 6:30 PM Friday night. He did so in place of his brother, Mason Costner, who was also incarcerated. Mason was being bonded out, a sheriff’s official said. Instead, his brother Chad used the opportunity to escape.
“He and his brother were both in jail,” said Chief Deputy Steve Rorex. “His brother was getting bonded out and he kind of posed as his brother.”
Chad was incarcerated actively through the Arkansas Department of Correction, VineLink records show. In addition, there are open cases against him in Cross and Poinsett. A parole hold was on him at the jail before he escaped.
Authorities began searching for Chad in Poinsett County and believed him to still be in the area.
Shortly before 1 AM Saturday, he was apprehended at a residence, the chief deputy said.
